Boring

We were getting Samuel and Isaac to bed later than normal due to my birthday celebration. Samuel picked a longer book to read for bedtime and I asked him to get a short book since it was so late. He wasn’t happy but reluctantly complied. Typically, we watch a brief scripture video and I informed the boys that it was too late to watch it and proceeded with the remainder of our normal night time activities. We were then interrupted by Samuel’s declaration that I was boring because I read the short book and wouldn’t let them watch the scripture movie. Kelsey and I laughed, especially as he started chucking stuffed animals in disgust.

Thinking that his frustration is over, I say our family prayer. Samuel immediately follows with his personal prayer. His prayer starts out as normal, but takes a drastic turn as he starts praying about his Dad being boring and backing up his grievance with the indisputable evidence as detailed above. Kelsey and I were struggling to not completely bust out laughing as Samuel then chastises us for laughing during his prayer.

What can I say. I turn 39 and automatically become boring

Figured out hiking

We went camping and hiking as a family this weekend, including Boss. There are two stories, one from each of the boys, worth telling about our hike to Ruth Lake (pictured below).

IMG_6725-Edit

1. While we were hiking Isaac talked or made sound effects almost every moment of the entire hike. We were getting a pure stream of thought from Isaac which was very entertaining. Our favorite part was when he started narrating for Boss.

“If Boss could talk he would say this, ‘I wish that I could climb up these rocks as fast as Samuel and Isaac. Maybe I shouldn’t even be doing this.'”

2. While hiking back from Ruth Lake, Samuel had an epiphany about hiking.

“I figured out what hiking is. Hiking is just walking.”

Well said, Samuel, well said.

“…but I won’t be happy”

Since it is Mother’s Day, the primary children get to sing to all the mothers in front of the whole congregation during the first hour of church. We told/warned the boys beforehand that they’d be singing so they wouldn’t be surprised when it was time to go up front and sing for their Mama.

Isaac: “I don’t want to.”
Kelsey: “But it will make me so happy if you get up and sing. I’ll probably even cry happy tears!”
Isaac: “Okay, I’ll get up to sing and it will make you happy, but I won’t be happy.”

After church Isaac said it actually did make him happy and that what he said this morning was, “just an expression.”

New Playset

Playset complete. Here is the tally.
  • 2+ days of effort spread out over a week
    • I expected that it would only take an afternoon, but boy was I wrong
  • A few delays due to incorrect assembly
    • Yeah, the instructions were very clear (note the sarcasm)
  • Another delay due to an under-sized/incorrect cargo net
    • Frustrating couple of hours struggling to get the cargo net to work
    • Additional 4 day delay waiting for a replacement net from the vendor
    • Answering the boys’ continual questions of when are we going to finish it
    • Connecting the right net once it arrived
  • Two little helpers who soon lost motivation and decided that water guns were more fun

Now I understand why people pay to have these things installed.

World Domination

Isaac: “Mom, if I wanted to, I could take over the world.”

I think we may have watched one too many superhero cartoons lately.

Also, it is a good thing for us that he doesn’t want to because I’m fairly certain that the pathway to world domination starts with taking over our house first.

“and right”

Here is a quick conversation between Kelsey and Samuel.

Kelsey: “You are smart and kind, and wonderful”

Samuel: “and right”

Halloween 2014

A couple of pictures from Halloween 2014.

Samuel went as Iron Man and Isaac as Iron Patriot.

Samuel’s Honesty

At dinner tonight, we had a very interesting conversation that did not help my self-esteem. Children bring complete honesty to a family. No matter how much self-denial you are in, they quickly snap you back to reality.

Samuel said something that we did not understand and Kelsey questioned him to see if she heard him correctly.

Kelsey: “Are you calling me fat?”

Samuel: “No, you’re not fat. Daddy’s fat. Daddy is large. Daddy eats all the food in the house. Daddy is going to break the ceiling.”

Wow, I guess I let myself go and it is very obvious for a 5-year old.

Ask me about my talents

From Primary today, Samuel brought home a sheet of paper listing his talents (dictated to his Primary teacher). Kelsey and I cracked up at some of the talents on his list.

Samuel's Talents

I think I have some of the same talents, especially playing Angry Birds and watching movies. 🙂

Soccer coaching failure

In preparation for another soccer season, we started backyard soccer practice with Samuel. Anyone familiar with 5-year old soccer realizes that there is really only one technique to practice: kick the ball into the goal.

Today was Samuel’s first soccer game. He was excited and ready to play. As the game progressed, the ball ended up in-front of his team’s goal. Samuel executed perfectly what we had worked on in the backyard, kick the ball into the goal. Unfortunately, since it was the wrong goal, I quickly realized that we needed to practice with TWO goals. Home coaching failure by Samuel’s well-meaning Dad.
